Match Report from Karl ROBSON

The Cockatoos headed down to Lyon to play their first away match of the 2018/2019 season following their win against Cergy-Pontoise in round 1. With a 6 week break between their first two matches, the Cockatoos knew that they needed to get the rust out of their system fast against a talented Lyon team.

Jan WISNIEWSKI was playing his first game for the ‘toos after having been loaned to Bayonne in round 1 and was immediately deployed to the backline to help fill the gap left by the missing Tristan STANLEY. In an unusual turn, the ‘toos had all three of their talls available to them and François PONGE, Babacar SALL and Jean ROSADO rotated throughout the key position posts all day long.

After a tight first quarter Lyon began to skip away in the second with the toos struggling to keep up in the midfield battle. Fortunately for the ‘toos, Lyon were struggling to kick straight keeping them in the game up until the 3/4 time break. With the midfield starting to get on top thanks to Julien DAGOIS, Lucas LOVELL and Clément BOUCHET, but Gareth STURGE struggling to have his usual impact up forward, coach Steven TROLLOPE swung himself to the backline and placed Jan ‘the Wiz’ WISNIEWSKI up forward. This saw an immediate change in fortunes as the Wiz began slotting goals from everywhere, ending up with 3 goals in the quarter. Alongside the strong scoreboard impact from the midfield with both LOVELL (4) and DAGOIS (3) in the goals, the Toos ran home relatively comfortable winners given they were behind all day long until the last quarter.

Thanks to Lyon for hosting us, a great win for the ‘toos that will hopefully inspire more strong performances to come.

Go Cocks!
