A SPIRITED VICTORY
Match Report by Karl ROBSON
The Cockatoos made their way down to sunny Bayonne to take on a physically imposing Bayonne side that had been very competitive in their first full season in the league. With a reduced number of players compared to what the toos were used to, and hurting from the late out of playing coach Steven TROLLOPE (broken finger), the toos were ready for a tough match while undermanned.
The strategy was simple, get out to a lead early on and then hold on for dear life for the rest of the game and the Cockatoos managed to do just that. With a makeshift forward line with half-back Karl ROBSON deployed to full forward and trying to quell the influence of Toulouse captain and most experienced player in French national team captain Sylvain MAYLIE the toos managed to keep the ball in relatively tight with Lucas LOVELL, Julien DAGOIS and Will LEYSEN providing a much needed scoring threat both in the midfield and while resting at half forward. It was great to see Ruben HAALEBOS get a couple of vital goals on the board and François PONGE fighting all day in the unfamiliar ruck position with the rest of the team sitting between 170 and 180cms.
A passionate and potentially season defining win for the Cockatoos, massive effort by all those who made the trip down. Thanks for Bayonne for putting on a ripping after party as well, really impressive to see them so competitive in their first season, hopefully a sign of good things to come.
