Match Report by Karl ROBSON

The Paris Cockatoos came up against a spirited ALFA Lions side featuring a number of new players in the first match of the 2019/2020 French championship at the second of the turf fields at Stade de la Grenouillere in Parc de Sceaux, Antony (92). The ALFA Lions rushed out of the gates with national team players Pierre LECHASLES and Thomas DEPONDT both dominating on the field and carrying their less experienced teammates along with them. The Cockatoos, despite fielding a very strong side on paper, struggled to adjust to the early tempo set by the Lions.

New recruit Bradley GEDDES, a former SANFL player with Woodville-West Torrens started out in the midfield, but as is often the case for those shifting from 18-a-side to 9-a-side footy, it took a while for him to adjust. Star goalkicker Ned MORRISON pulled on the boots again to lead the forward line whilst Tristan STANLEY, in his last match before returning back to Australia to live in Perth, was deployed in the back line.

Having been shocked into action by the first quarter, the Cockatoos slowly began to bring things back in the second quarter, which was a sign of things to come as the Cockatoos came out strong in the 3rd take the lead off the back of some excellent work by Lucal LOVELL and MORRISON in the forward line showing beautiful skills by foot, finding space, and finishing well.

Half time also saw a structural shift, with GEDDES shifted to half back, which saw him impose himself on the game more intercepting a number of Lyon forays into the forward line with big pack marks in addition to being unbeatable one on one. The small field also meant that he could make use of his elite kicking skills off both sides to hit the leads made by LOVELL and MORRISON in the forward line. The Lions continued to hit the scoreboard however making for a tense final quarter.

Needing inspiration heading into the last quarter, Babacar SALL – having rucked all day with minimal relief – roused the team with a speech and got back out their for a brilliant last quarter. SALL rucked without break for the entire quarter, helping the midfield including Steven TROLLOPE, LOVELL and Julien DAGOIS, remain marginally on top and seeing the Cockatoos end the day winners.

The day was tinged with some sadness though as Tristan STANLEY, after 7 seasons at the club, played his last match before returning to Australia. A two time premiership player, Tristan has been a key member of the club over a number of years and we wish him all the best in the future!

Thanks as always to the umpires and supporters who came along and helped make the match happen!

Go Cocks!
